Under the ambit of its flagship programme Unnat Jyoti By Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) aims to replace India’s 770 million inefficient bulbs in India with LED bulbs by 2019, as well as install 2.13 million energy efficient ceiling fans. EESL’s intervention for fans and lights, two of the most commonly used home and commercial appliances enables citizens to access high quality products at affordable prices and participate in reducing India’s carbon footprint.

Along with these benefits, the UJALA-supplied 9-W LED bulbs offer a higher lumen output, a longer life, as well as durability, as compared to incandescent lightbulbs. The 50 watts BEE 5-star rated energy efficient fans being distributed under UJALA are 30 percent more efficient than market-available variants, enabling consumers to reduce their bills by 45 percent. These fans are accompanied with a 2.5-year technical warranty.

With the support from the GEF 6 project, 39.7 million LED bulbs and 2.13 million energy efficient ceiling fans has been targeted to be installed. Against this, 90.2 million LED domestic bulbs (226%) and around 1 million BEE 5 star rated ceiling fans (47%) have been installed.

As the world’s largest street light replacement programme, Street Light National Programme (SLNP) aims to replace India’s 13.4 million conventional street lights in India with LED lights. Under this programme, EESL is replacing street lights with smart LED lights that are connected through a web-based monitoring system at its own costs, with no upfront investment by the municipalities, thereby making their adoption even more attractive.

The use of a Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) for remote operation and supervising has mitigated the lack of monitoring mechanism and warranties against technical defects. EESL has partnered with states, municipal bodies and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to exponentially increase SLNP’s scale and reach. As part of the seven-year contracts signed with municipalities, EESL guarantees a minimum energy saving, and also provides free replacements and maintenance at no additional costs.

Achieving the SLNP pan-India target will achieve peak demand reduction of 1393 MW, annual energy savings of 835 crore kWh, and reduction in 56 lakh tons of CO2. With the support of GEF 6 project, EESL targeted to replace 1.5 million Street lights and till date have installed more than 7.5 million Street lights ( 500%). An integral part of the Indian economy, the agriculture sector constitutes around 18.5 percent of the nation’s total energy consumption. Electricity consumption by the sector is projected to rise by an estimated 54 percent between 2015 and 2022. To cater to this demand in a sustainable and energy-efficient manner, we are implementing the world’s largest Agricultural Demand Side Management (AgDSM) programme.

Under the programme, inefficient agricultural pump sets are being replaced with energy-efficient variants. With the support of the GEF-6 project, the programme aims to replace 0.23 million inefficient pumps with energy-efficient sets. Out of the same, EESL has installed around 75,000 energy efficient pumps (32.6%), The programme aims to benefit the Indian farmers by enhancing their access to an energy-efficient solution which will reduce not only the peak demand for electricity but also the total energy consumption by the agriculture sector. Along with zero-cost energy-efficient pump sets, EESL offers a long-term partnership to the farmers under the ESCO model.

EESL is offering state-of-the-art tri-generation technology to various industries and institutions in India. Tri-generation is the simultaneous process of cooling, heating and power generation from only one fuel input. Its by product is waste heat, which is directed to absorption chillers and boilers for space cooling, hot water and related purposes. The technology is being rolled out through EESL’s unique Pay-As-You-Save (PAYS) business model. EESL also provides an integrated service offering that includes equipment maintenance, as well as electricity, heat and power supply.

Through this offering, the clients will not bear any upfront costs for technology installation, while EESL will redeem the capital and operating costs for the installations through accrued energy savings of the institution and industry. EESL is exploring the potential for tri-generation in the international markets, through the acquisition of Edina, UK’s leading supplier, installer and maintenance provider for combined heat and power (CHP), gas, and diesel power generation solutions. With this acquisition, EESL will also expand Edina’s global footprint to a larger customer base across international markets, including India, fostering global best practices in the domestic markets.

Tri generation has immense potential in India, pegged at around 20,000 megawatts and has relevance in institutions like data centers, industrial establishments, universities, hospitals, colleges, hotels, airports, and shopping malls. The tri generation technology offered by EESL also has an array of benefits such as a low payback period of just 2-3 years, acting as a reliable buffer against power outages in critical applications, providing a feasible alternative to thermal energy, which shall enable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50% and enhancing energy efficiency of the electricity plants.

With the support of the Project, a Tri- Generation unit has been commissioned and made operational for the Capacity of 0.8MW + 236 TR VAM at Mahindra & Mahindra, Mumbai.

EESL’s AC program aims to promote energy efficiency in the cooling sector by making super-efficient AC’s affordable for the common consumer and at the same time strengthen government’s vision of phasing out environmentally detrimental refrigerants used in air conditioners as envisioned in the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP).

With the support of the GEF-6 project, EESL has launched this program for deploying 50,000 ACs with ISEER rating of 5.4+ and environmental friendly refrigerants. Subsequently, EESL has conducted an Internationally Competitive Bidding (ICB) tender for procuring 50,000 S.E. ACs of 1.5 TR capacity and the program was rolled out in July 2019. The support from the GEF project has strengthened the delivery modalities and internal capabilities. Further the GEF support have been supporting scaling up and continuing the AC programme beyond the project as well.

An online mart has also been developed for the benefit of interested consumers for buying the ACs at eeslmart.in.

Significant energy savings opportunity existing in motor sector being the industrial prime mover. With limited developments so far in the Indian market and huge benefits to the market and the environment alike, national motor replacement program is targeting deployment of 40,000 nos. of IE3 motors (premium efficient) of different ranges starting from 0.75 to 75 kW.

Subsequently, EESL has floated Internationally Competitive Bidding (ICB) tenders for procuring 40,000 IE3 motors. LoA to the selected vendor based on the above mentioned ICB process was awarded during August 2019 and the program is currently being implemented.

Among others, the program objective is to make available IE3 motors are affordable price, creating an eco-system of deploying energy efficient motors, supporting GoI order for promoting and manufacturing of IE2 and above efficiency class motors, etc. The support from the GEF project has strengthened the delivery modalities and internal capabilities. Further the GEF support have been supporting scaling up and continuing the AC programme beyond the project as well.

The Government of India (GoI) is promoting EV adoption in India and has recently announced its target to reach 25% EV adoption by 2030. Several state governments are also working towards accelerating EV adoption in their respective states. With the establishment of fast charging infrastructure highly advanced electric vehicles are expected to penetrate Indian market.

With this background, EESL aims to install Public Charging Infrastructure (PSC) across country with no financial incentive from the government. With the support of the GEF-6 project, EESL aims at establishing 200 nos. of fast charging infrastructure - C122 (2X50 kW DC + 22 kW AC) chargers across the country.

Subsequently, EESL has floated Internationally Competitive Bidding (ICB) tenders for procuring 200 EV chargers (fast charging capabilities). LoA to the selected vendor based on the above mentioned ICB process has been awarded during November 2019 and implementation have been ongoing since then. In addition, the project is also supporting the EV chargers programme in another tender for 1,020 quantity which includes chargers of different capacity and protocols.

Indian Automobile sector is one among the fastest growing markets in the world. Realising the importance of the EVs in reducing the emissions intensity and improving air quality, Government of India launched the National Electric Mobility Programme in the 2018 with an objective to increase the on-road EVs by targeting the entire eco-system.

In line with the same and under the due guidance of the Government, EESL has earlier completed the procurement process of 10,000 e-cars.

Further, keeping in sync with the evolving ecosystem, EESL has further tendered out 250 nos. of long range e-cars which were supported by the GEF-6 project. The success of the programme with the GEF-6 project has resulted in another tender for 300 cars and the implementation is underway.
